Sheridan School, an independent K-8 private school located in Washington DC, is seeking a full-time 12-month Controller for its Business Office.
Responsibilities:
Management of all accounting functions, including journal entries, the monthly closing process, and the preparation of internal financial statements.
Monthly reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
Implementation and maintenance of internal controls, including communication of and compliance with school policies related to purchasing, travel and other expenses
Management of cash, endowment balances, and cash flows.
Assistance to the CFO in annual budgeting and forecasting.
Management of all audit processes, including preparation of all workpapers and responses for financial statement, retirement plan, and workers’ compensation audits.
Preparation of Form 990 in consultation with audit and tax firm.
Timely filing to meet various state and federal requirements, including licensing, annual reports, and exemptions.
Management of all accounts payable functions, including vendor setup, invoice processing, and 1099s.
Oversight of accounts receivable for student billing.
Collaborate with CFO and Payroll & Benefits Manager on all Business Office functions.
Support Admission, Advancement and Auxiliary Program teams as a resource in enrollment, billing, and other functions.
Qualifications:
At least 7 years of relevant nonprofit general ledger accounting experience
Bachelor's degree is required; CPA or advanced degree preferred
Excellent understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and other accounting and compliance matters
Proficiency in Excel and Google Sheets, including pivot tables and basic macros
Previous work in Intacct, BILL, Paylocity, and TADS, or similar accounting, payables, payroll, and student billing software programs
Self-motivated and organized, with great attention to detail; proven discretion working with confidential information, and high standards for ethical behavior.
Ability to collaborate with, and provide support for, the entire organization in a service-oriented manner
