The Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI) is a nonprofit membership organization that offers education, training, publications, and professional engagement opportunities in the field of food and drug law. As a neutral convener, FDLI provides a venue for stakeholders to inform innovative public policy, law, and regulation. FDLI’s scope covers all industries regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and related agencies and authorities in the U.S. and globally, including drugs, medical devices, biologics, food, dietary supplements, cosmetics, cannabis, veterinary, and tobacco products.
FDLI is seeking a Director, Educational Programs to serve as a key member of FDLI’s senior leadership team. This position is responsible for the strategic planning as well as the day-to-day oversight of the majority of FDLI’s programs via a team of six people. As an important face of the organization, this role requires a high level of networking with the key stakeholders in the food and drug law community, as well as an understanding of a variety of issues in the FDA-regulated space. The Director, Educational Programs speaks publicly, leads committees, and works closely with FDLI members and staff. Attendance in-person at events in DC throughout the year is required and the Director must reside in the Washington, DC-Metro region. The position reports to the President & CEO.
FDLI is a hybrid work environment composed of a strong and supportive team of twenty-one professionals. FDLI has a primarily remote office environment. While employees generally work from an approved home office or similar remote location, all FDLI employees will have certain workdays in the FDLI office or Washington, DC region, as necessary to meet the needs of the organization and position. It is expected this position will attend all major in-person conferences in addition to regular staff meetings/events scheduled throughout the year.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES
Leads the Educational Programs team and oversees the development of most FDLI programs, including conferences, webinars, and introductory courses
Provides strategic leadership to achieve FDLI’s organizational objectives in collaboration with peer department leaders and the CEO
Develops departmental materials for Board meetings and presents these to the Board, and also participates in recommending members to fill Board vacancies
Leads and oversees planning and execution of the FDLI Annual Conference, our flagship meeting of approximately 900 attendees, to include agenda development, keynote and breakout session speaker selection and invitations, lecturers, and awards.
Works closely with Senior Director, Meetings and Partnerships on events
Monitors and tracks regulatory developments in all FDA-regulated industries
Works with members, staff, committee members, and subject matter experts to identify, select, and develop educational program topics and offerings
Cultivates relationships with FDA officials in furtherance of planning FDLI programs and achieving organizational objectives
Writes and reviews conference and panel descriptions, as well as promotional copy and other marketing-related materials, as needed
Works closely with the marketing department to ensure successful promotion of educational programs
Works closely with the membership department to identify and secure new members and aid in member engagement through educational program involvement
With the Chief Operating Officer, develops and implements the budget for the Educational Programs department
Serves as staff lead on committees to administer and coordinate the committee and any related programs; provides leadership for the committee selection process
Ensures that educational experiences, services, and programs meet the highest standard of excellence
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree required and JD or graduate degree strongly preferred
Working knowledge of U.S. food and drug law regulation and policy strongly preferred
Experience with FDA regulation, program development, and/or stakeholder management
Experience leading teams
Strategic thinking skills
Attention to detail, balanced with big-picture perspective; ability to prioritize and deliver multiple objectives simultaneously; demonstrated accountability and agility
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to build relationships with staff, members, and volunteers, and outside organizations
