Serving thousands of member organizations and individuals since 1957, The Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP) is the national service, advocacy, and membership organization for the live performing arts field. APAP is dedicated to developing and supporting a robust performing arts presenting, booking and touring industry and the professionals who work within it.
APAP is seeking an inaugural Director, Development to join its team. The Director, Development will be an integral role in APAP’s Washington, DC-based team, working alongside APAP’s President & CEO. APAP seeks a knowledgeable, dynamic, and creative Director, Development to provide senior-level leadership and operational oversight of the organization’s resource development initiatives in support of APAP’s mission, vision, values, and its revenue goals. Note: APAP will maintain a preference to candidates who are based in either Washington, DC or New York City. If the individual is based in Washington, DC, the position will be hybrid with regularly scheduled in-the-office time. If the individual is based in New York City, the position will be fully remote with occasional in-person meetings with the President & CEO.
The Director, Development will be responsible for implementation and execution of APAP’s multiple fundraising initiatives across a range of constituencies: individuals, corporations, foundations, and government bodies. Reporting to the President & CEO, they will serve as a thought partner and work collaboratively to establish, execute, and evaluate annual fundraising strategies. Having an entrepreneurial and resourceful approach, the ability to self-direct and adapt, this individual will bring enthusiasm and fluency in both in-person and online fundraising, communication, and relationship building.
Position Responsibilities:
In close partnership with the President/CEO, leads and implements APAP’s strategic fundraising initiatives, including the preparation and implementation of a comprehensive written annual development plan.
Develops the annual development budget that reflects the most aggressive and achievable philanthropic revenue model for APAP based on strategy and necessary investment. Responsible for reforecasts and monthly budget management.
Prepares briefing materials and conducts research for the President & CEO, Board of Directors, and Resource Development Committee, as it relates to donor outreach and prospecting to ensure they are knowledgeable, effective ambassadors for the organization.
Identifies, cultivates, and solicits major gifts from a diverse group of donors, including corporate, foundation, and government entities, both independently and in collaboration with the Board of Director’s Resource Development Committee.
Creates, manages, and executes donor recognition and stewardship programs, as well as designs and enriches a planned giving program. Maintains APAP’s donor and prospect lists.
Provides leadership to the planning, development, and implementation of APAP|NYC engagement opportunities for individual, corporate, and foundation prospects during the conference.
Partners with APAP’s grants management consultant to generate additional grant and funding proposals through established relationships and newly identified sources.
Collaborates cross-departmentally on projects that promote the resourcing of APAP’s programs and services.
Represents and promotes the mission, vision, and values of APAP through all interactions in-person and through written and verbal correspondence.
Passionately advocates for APAP, working with external teams to find opportunities to engage with broader communities, participate in events, and position President & CEO engagement to lead to improved visibility and fundraising capacity.

The Association of Performing Arts Professionals offers a comprehensive benefits package and a competitive salary commensurate with experience. Requirements/Skills/Attributes:
Experienced and excellent fundraiser with an entrepreneurial inclination and demonstrated capacity to materially grow development/philanthropic efforts.
Good judgement, sensitivity, and responsiveness to the unique needs of a national service and membership organization and the range of audiences it serves.

Strong communications skills, including listening attentively, giving and receiving feedback, public speaking, and persuasive writing with authenticity and effectiveness (in person and online).
Proven experience and knowledge of the full spectrum of development, including planned giving, gift solicitations, stewardship, closing, donor recognition and administration.
History of working with individual, legacy, corporate, foundation, and government sources, and proven ability to expand and cultivate donor relationships over time.
Ability to think strategically and creatively with professionalism and charisma. Ability to anticipate issues, prevent problems, and troubleshoot challenges.
Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders throughout the organization and across the different sectors of the performing arts industry.
Excellent project management skills with superb ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage several projects concurrently and meet internal and external deadlines. Experience with Asana project management software is a plus.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Dynamic 365 and its applications, as well as the ability to train and quickly learn customer relationship management (CRM) and association management systems.
A bachelor’s degree (advanced degree desirable) from an accredited college/university is required.
A minimum of seven to ten years of professional experience. A candidate who has worked at an entrepreneurial nonprofit or in an arts and cultural environment or member service organization is not required, but highly desired.
Experience in the performing arts and/or knowledge of the field and arts ecosystem is highly desired.
