Working across boundaries, RJI catalyzes innovative social change through scholarship, interventions, and transformative strategies.
Job Overview
The Communications Director leads and directs the communications strategy and objectives for the Racial Justice Institute, playing a leadership role in the development and advancement of the Institute's digital presence, including website management, and email marketing and social media strategies.
A mission critical member of the Racial Justice Institute's team, the Communications Director works with the Executive Director to create and implement strategies aimed at promoting Racial Justice Institute programing, reaching the Racial Justice Institute's key audiences with its core work products, including developing original internal and external communication materials such as newsletters, general announcements, press releases, intranet content, employee, student and volunteer handbooks, fundraising assets and internal brochures, writing and editing digital content; and ensuring consistent and reliable communications both internally and externally.
They assume overall responsibility for all RJI strategic communications, including content development and consistent messaging to strategic vision; and work closely with the Racial Justice Institute's Executive Director and other members of the team to develop a multi-year written strategic communications plan that advances the Institute's vision and mission reflected in the content and all communications activities. As well, they collaborate with the Executive Director, the Racial Justice Institute team and its Centers and affiliated faculty to produce content (across multiple media) to advance our mission and highlight the work of RJI.
The Communications Director has primary responsibility for the development and maintenance of the website, assisted by the Executive Program Manager for the Racial Justice Institute, as well as the visual identity and brand(ing) of the Institute, in keeping with larger University guidelines. Along with the Executive Director and RJI leadership, they draft reports and presentations, news stories and other content pieces to advance the objectives of the Racial Justice Institute's strategic communications plan - including highlighting and amplifying the Racial Justice Institutes activities, impact and accomplishments. Additionally, they coordinate and collaborate with their counterparts in school and university communications departments as appropriate; promote RJI widely and effectively, both within the Georgetown community and more broadly; and develop and implement a social media strategy and a regular newsletter consistent with the Institute's strategic communications plan.
The Communications Director develops and maintains a robust press list to facilitate outreach and placements for Racial Justice Institute Leadership, affiliates, and in a wide variety of media settings - including television, radio, podcast, op-eds and social media - to advance the Institute's strategic communication plan, elevate the Institute's profile, and amplify the Institute's work.
They also maintain a centralized system for vetting all calls and inquiries from the media, including a press log; determining the best messenger to respond to inquiries; developing talking points best advance the Institute's strategic communications objectives; and working with messengers to coach and prepare for the media contact.
Work Interactions
The Communications Director reports to the Executive Director requiring effective communication with the President's Office - the administrative home of the Racial Justice Institute. Additional interactions include but are not limited to:
Works closely with the Executive Program Manager to implement aspects of the strategic communications plan, including outreach and promotion of Racial Justice Initiative events and program and events and programing of the Racial Justice Initiative's Centers.
Regularly engages with members of the Racial Justice Institute's staff and leadership, including the staff of the Racial Justice Institute's Center for Men's Health Equity; the Woodshed: A Center for Art Thought & Culture, the Georgetown Center on Race, Law and Justice and additional Centers to ensure that the work of the centers is amplified and elevated to meet the objectives of the strategic communications plan for the Racial Justice Institute.
Coordinates and collaborates with counterparts in school and University communications as necessary and appropriate, and regularly engages faculty across the University to build and deepen relationships.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Arts in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field
At least 6 to 8 years professional communications and strategic communications experience - including developing digital content, running an institutional social media account; and managing the website, email marketing, and effective outreach to academic, nonprofit, government, and other policymaker audiences [note: an equivalent combination of education and work experience will be considered)
Significant and proven successful experience developing and implementing multi-year written strategic communications plans and message development; as well as media placement and outreach executive leadership media coaching
Extensive to significant experience and success creating, developing, hosting and promoting podcasts to advance strategic communications and public education and awareness goals of an organization or campaign
Ability to work with changing priorities in a fast-paced, results driven environment
Excellent, writing, editing, and presentation skills
Functional knowledge of the following communications tools -- Cision, WordPress, Google Analytics, Adobe Pro, MailChimp, Canva, CRM platforms, Facebook and Twitter ads, TweetDeck, Hootsuite, YouTube, Zoom Webinars, Headliner, and LinkedIn
Experience with institutional communications
Preferred qualification
Campaign, policy advocacy and/or political strategic communication
