The Packard Center at Johns Hopkins is a collaboration of scientists worldwide, working aggressively to develop new treatments and a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The Center is the only institution of its kind dedicated solely to the disease. Its research is meant to translate from the laboratory bench to the clinic in record time. Housed at Hopkins' East Baltimore campus, the Center is supported largely through private philanthropic funding, as well as more traditional grant support from the National Institutes of Health. Answer ALS is a multi-institutional program that is operated and coordinated by the Packard Center. The program comprises five areas of study including clinical and basic science research, data analytics, technology and infrastructure programs. Both programs have experienced great success in raising philanthropic funding to advance the science that will help find a cure for ALS with the help of related foundations.
We are seeking a Director, Operations and Administration who will have oversight of facilitating the strategic planning and operations of both programs, working with the Center Director, respective advisory boards, the School of Medicine, scientific investigators and the Center staff. Knowledge and experience with academic medical centers, large research programs, foundation leadership and funds management will ensure success in this position.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The Director is a key leadership role within the Packard Center and bears responsibility for its administration, programs and strategic plan. General responsibilities include:
Reports directly to the Packard Center Director, Jeffrey Rothstein, M.D., Ph.D.
Works closely with the Packard Center and Answer ALS Advisory Boards to ensure effective implementation of initiatives, milestones, and fiscal accountability.
Responsible for communicating effectively with the Advisory Boards and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, information required for the Board to function properly and make informed decisions.
Works closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the Packard Center.
Financial Performance & Viability
Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the Packard Center and all its programs.
Works with the Development Office to secure sufficient resources to ensure the financial health and growth of the Center.
Oversees an annual budget of approx. $3M for Packard core operations and a total budget of approx. $45 million for the Answer ALS Research Program.
Mission, Strategy & Communications
Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that the Packard Center can successfully fulfill its mission into the future.
Oversees the administration of approx. 30 research grants to ALS investigators both internal and external to JHU.
Responsible for the enhancement of the Packard Center's image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and nonprofit organizations.
Coordinates and oversees the production and publication of materials used to promote the Packard Center, report progress and steward donors. Examples of such materials include annual reports, quarterly newsletters press releases and maintenance of the Packard Center's website.
Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff including a Financial Analyst, a Communications Specialist, a Grants and Contracts Specialist and an Administrative Assistant.
Oversee organization of Advisory Board and Executive Committee meetings (including 2 in-person meetings and 4-6 calls).
Oversee marketing and other communications efforts.
Review and approve contracts for services.
Strategic planning and implementation.
Oversees the planning and staffing of the Packard Center annual symposium (speakers, agenda and meeting logistics).
Responsibilities specific to the Answer ALS Program
Oversees the coordination and administration of all aspects of the Answer ALS program across eight clinical sites (Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts General Hospital, Emory, Ohio State University, Washington University, Northwestern University, Texas Neurology and Cedars Sinai Medical Center) and five basic research sites (University California, Irvine, UCSF-Gladstone Institute, Massachusetts Institute Technology, Cedars Sinai).
Manages a team of five Program Managers.
Coordinates efforts, including grants administration, fund raising, and marketing, between three ALS non-profits (The Packard Center, the Answer ALS Foundation, and ALS Finding a Cure) involved in the program.
Reports directly to the Answer ALS Executive Director, Jeffrey Rothstein, MD, PhD.
Coordinates the execution of agreements (grant award letters, data use agreements etc.) with internal and external Answer ALS program partners.
Writes comprehensive program reports on a quarterly schedule (these reports summarize operational progress, challenges and alternative strategies across the clinical, basic science and financial arms of the program).
Assists with content development for the Answer ALS website, marketing and communication strategies.
Oversees the planning and staffing of the Answer ALS annual symposium (speakers, agenda and meeting logistics).
Oversees the development and implementation of responsible program policies and procedures including data and resource sharing.
Conducts primary and secondary research to understand the challenges facing program managers. Delivers insights, practices and toolkits to help program efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
Works closely with Answer ALS Leadership to establish funding priorities and advise on organizational priorities.
Supports governance activities with multiple different academic and commercial labs. Develops and implements working structures to coordinate all efforts, and ensure milestones are achieved.
Supports the Advisory Board in reviewing overall program progress, sources of funding, public/external communications, and communications with donors.
Supports the Advisory Board in meeting (virtually or in person) on a monthly basis.
Ensures notes from Advisory Board meetings are drafted and available for review.
Acts as agent for leadership in activities prescribed by the Answer ALS Advisory Board and Leadership.
Travels as required to conferences, meetings with external collaborators and key donors.
Bachelor's Degree in Business, Healthcare Administration or related field required.
Five (5) years of related project management experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

MBA or advanced degree in related field.
Ideally has experience and leadership in Nonprofit organizations, disease-focused philanthropies and academic medical centers or other large organizational structures.
Management of large and complex budgets.
Experience with philanthropic funding and Advisory Board facilitation.
Experience with Neurological disease would be valuable.
