Through the work of their volunteers, CLSI facilitates the creation of best practice standards, guidelines, and products for medical laboratories. Organizations use CLSI standards to improve their testing outcomes, maintain accreditation, bring products to market faster, and navigate regulatory hurdles. CLSI provides leadership advancing medical laboratory science and its application to healthcare worldwide. CLSI is best known for its portfolio of 200 standards and guidelines developed through an open and transparent consensus process. It is also known for its direct hands-on global outreach work to implement its products in resource constrained countries through its Global Partnerships Program.

CLSI’s 1,750 organizational members work in various settings including industry, government, and the healthcare professions. Its volunteers’ author CLSI standards with the support of a professional staff of 35, who provide all related organizational support and office functions, operating in a virtual environment. Through a consensus-based process, CLSI’s standards are developed and written by volunteer committees of leading experts in the field of laboratory medicine. Their volunteer committees share information from their own laboratory work to create documents used by the medical laboratory community to improve processes, pass, and maintain accreditation, meet regulatory requirements, and more. CLSI members support volunteer committee work and encourage their staff to participate on document development committees. Members also review, comment, and vote on CLSI documents before they are published, ensuring that the document development process is fair and unbiased, and that everyone has a seat at the table.
Through their Global Partnerships Program, CLSI provides international outreach services and hands-on support to laboratories around the world, helping them achieve sustainable quality with systems to better diagnose and treat patients with infectious diseases. CLSI supports labs to prepare for internationally recognized accreditation with proven and trusted hands-on training and mentorship. Each program undertaken is customized to the needs of the in-country labs supported through collaboration and customization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES CLSI is seeking a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organization and focus on achieving its mission and strategic vision for the future. They are accountable to the President of the 15-member Board of Directors, with input from its 5-member Executive Committee, for the work and outcomes of the CLSI. As a voting member of the Board, the CEO is responsible for guiding the development and implementation of the strategic plan, programs, policies, and practices of the organization. They will lead the staff in the implementation of the strategic plan's goals and objectives and in the effective management of all other aspects of the organization. Among the CEO’s primary responsibilities are the following:
Guides, advances, and executes the mission and strategic plan for CLSI in collaboration with the Board of Directors, members, and staff to achieve its goals and assure its continued success.
Serves as an Ex-Officio member of the Executive, Finance, Nominating, and Awards Committees of the Board.
Forges and maintains an effective, collaborative, and transparent working relationship with the Board of Directors. Engages Board members collectively and individually in communicating the key challenges, opportunities, and trends affecting the organization to ensure its continued relevancy and ability to be agile.
Facilitates consensus among Board members on key issues.
Serves as principal liaison between the CLSI staff and the Board of Directors.
Provides guidance to the Board of Directors and committee leadership on governance, policies, and perspectives.
Administration and Operations
Leads CLSI’s operations, senior leadership team, and staff to assure the development and implementation of successful programs that achieve CLSI’s broader purpose and board-approved strategic goals, including the recruitment, engagement, and retention of a diverse membership and continued global growth.
Oversees the development and implementation of strategic, operational, and financial plans. Prepares an annual budget for review and approval by the Board of Directors. Communicates with the Board regularly on performance.
Builds upon current revenue sources and identifies new value-added services/products and sources of revenue to enhance member value and impact.
Monitors budget and financial performance to optimize the CLSI’s programs and financial outcomes, and to assure continued growth and sustainability of the organization.
Recruits, develops, engages, and leads a qualified staff to manage and administer the programs and services of the organization. Provides clear direction to the staff and empowers them to achieve their individual and collective goals. Fosters an inclusive, values-based, innovative, customer-focused, and collaborative culture.
Leads the senior management team, inspiring and empowering them in their roles. Cultivates cross-division collaboration and a culture of integrity, respect, teamwork, innovation, and results.
Delegates decision making appropriately throughout the organization to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
Effectively utilizes information technology to manage the organization’s operations and programs.
Ensures the legal and regulatory integrity of the CLSI. Understands the requirements for a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to ensure compliance with requirements and regulations.
Promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in the organization and membership.
Membership and Annual Meeting
Ensures that CLSI offers a strong value proposition and continuously solicits input to engage members and ensure their satisfaction.
Organizes and conducts quarterly committee meetings located at various locales in the U.S. for standards development activities, governance activities, education, and others consistent with the objectives of the organization.
Builds and maintains appropriate senior-level relationships with individuals domestically and internationally, including associations, industry, government, and public service organizations and stakeholders.
Represents CLSI to key audiences and stakeholders globally to build CLSI’s brand, public image, and that of its membership.
Serves as a key organization spokesperson, in collaboration with the Board President.
Provides leadership oversight, supports business and program growth, and provides senior relationship management of the CLSI Global Health Partnerships Program (GHP). GHP is fully funded by government and private foundation grants and contracts.
Develops and enhances CLSI’s strategies in conjunction with key staff to advance the global role of CLSI as a leader in laboratory medicine standards.
Works collaboratively with other organizations for joint efforts to improve laboratory medicine worldwide. Travels as appropriate to meet with leaders globally

Oversees a successful leadership transition that best serves CLSI’s strategic initiatives, members, operations, culture, and staff.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate is an executive-level leader with the professional experience and competencies to lead an innovative, complex global organization in this dynamic healthcare environment. They are responsible for effectively advancing CLSI’s mission and implementing its strategic plan to ensure the organization’s relevancy and value to its diverse membership. They will have a deep understanding of and commitment to the challenges and global opportunities that face the membership, the industry, and its key stakeholders.
The CEO will have the following experience and qualifications:
At least ten years of senior leadership experience within a relevant health-related or nonprofit organization.
Deep knowledge and experience in healthcare trends that are relevant to CLSI. A technical background and medical laboratory experience are desirable, but not required.
A results-oriented leader who has strong organizational, business, technology, and financial acumen. Senior leadership and management experience including strategic planning, standards development, membership services, financial management, marketing, training, and programs.
A strategic and visionary mindset to advance CLSI’s role in supporting the medical laboratory community globally.
A track record building and leading a highly professional, knowledgeable, and diverse staff team in a performance driven, dynamic, and results-oriented environment. Track record of identifying, developing, and engaging staff and fostering a culture of trust, collaboration, and empowerment. A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Proven business acumen, a results-oriented approach, and the ability to effectively manage assets - people, money, and time. Ability to drive a positive bottom line. Demonstrated experience creating new sustainable sources of revenue.
Experience reporting to and collaborating closely with a volunteer board of directors and cultivating strong working relationships with the board members. Strong diplomatic skills and political savvy.
Innovative and capable of anticipating and addressing trends affecting the organization and translating those into actions that advance CLSI’s goals and objectives.

EDUCATION A Bachelor’s Degree is required. An advanced degree in a science or health related field or MBA is highly desired.
