Job Summary and Mission:
The National Board is pursuing an ambitious and inclusive growth agenda toward our vision of every student learning from an accomplished teacher every day. The Vice President, Advocacy, Communications, and Engagement, will play a critical role in bringing a growing and diverse number of teachers into the National Board movement, growing a movement of champions across the country, and spreading our message with key stakeholders who share our vision of an elevated and empowered teaching profession.
The Vice President leads several functions key to the organization’s success. Core to success in this role will be leading and supporting the team in the development, implementation, and adaptation of key strategies focused on:
targeted marketing, messaging and broad communications;
policy advancement, teacher advocacy, and policy-relevant research;
educator activation, mobilization, and recognition; and
targeted state strategies.
The senior leader will lead a diverse, highly-skilled team in innovating strategies and advancing measurable outcomes in these areas, in service of the National Board’s strategic goals and mission, which call for growth and diversity in the reach and the impact of the National Board. The successful candidate will be a strategic, big picture thinker; bring expertise in advocacy, communications, engagement and / or mobilization, with a focus on messaging clarity and impact; and will strengthen the organization’s engagement with educators and the organizations that represent and support them, in the service of students. The successful candidate will also bring senior-level team management and staff development skills and a track record of cultivating talent and growth among staff on a diverse team.
The VP will serve on the senior leadership team and play a key advisory role to the President and Chief Executive Officer and the Chief Operating Officer, providing organizational strategic and cultural leadership and people management. The VP will play a significant role shaping the organization’s strategic direction and priorities, allocating and stewarding resources, and building a highly engaged, high performance culture. The VP will report to the Chief Operating Officer.
Summary of Key Responsibilities:
Strategic leadership in Advocacy, Communications, and Engagement
Drive a growth-oriented comprehensive strategic marketing and communications program that effectively communicates and perpetuates the National Board mission, story and value proposition among key audiences, especially in terms of growing the number of teachers interested in and pursuing Board certification
Drive strategic design and implementation of policy advancement and NBCT advocacy efforts to support and maintain National Board policy gains and awareness of Board certification among policymakers, including development and dissemination of policy-relevant research
Drive an educator mobilization strategy that builds and activates a movement of National Board champions, through meaningful engagement, network development and support, champion and recognition programs, and other approaches
Drive team and organizational focus on targeted state strategies that bring an integrated approach to inclusive growth in prioritized states, paired with strategic stakeholder relationship management
Lead and manage a diverse team with multiple direct reports and additional indirect staff members with a focus on equity and belonging
Support individual staff engagement, performance, development, and advancement, with consistent attention to equity
Build a strong, inclusive, and collaborative culture within the team and with other teams across the organization
Develop and oversee the department’s budget and allocate funds strategically and equitably
Participate and lead on the organization’s senior leadership team
Influence and actively support an intentional and growing organizational culture
Inform and co-determine strategic, financial, cultural, and people development priorities
In partnership with other senior leaders, drive integrated progress on diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization and across all aspects of our work
Contribute to building a collaborative and high-performing senior leadership team
The National Board's office is located in Arlington, VA; however, National Board staff are currently working remotely due to COVID-19.
Position Type & Salary Range
Expected Salary Range: $165,000 - $180,000 with competitive benefits

Summary of Experience:
Advanced degree or equivalent experience required.
10+ years of experience in education, specifically in leading strategic messaging for national nonprofits (strategic marketing, strategic communications, strategic advocacy, etc.) required.
Marketing, communications and analytics experience preferred but not required.
Policy and advocacy experience preferred but not required.
Mobilization, advocacy, and / or organizing experience preferred but not required.
Senior management experience, including successful team leadership and management, required.
P-12 teaching experience preferred, National Board Certification a plus.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:
Continuous standing, walking and sitting throughout the day.
Travel required, including the possibility of some out of state.
Some light lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required

Pending our reopen the office plan, based on monitoring of local and national COVID progress, work performed remotely and / or at National Board headquarters in Rosslyn, VA. Travel sites vary in comfort.
