About Goodwill Industries of the Valleys
Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, Inc., (“Goodwill”) was founded on October 10, 1931 in Roanoke, Virginia. The philosophy of “a hand-up, not a hand-out” out of which the organization was established, continues to inspire service delivery today. Our new President and CEO recently launched an innovative Advancement Division, a new business segment comprised of Business and Community Engagement, Marketing and Communications, and Philanthropy. Since the early 2000s Goodwill increased the number of persons served from 1,200 to more than 40,000, expanded retail operations from 13 to 40 stores, and increased revenue from $19.8 million to $56 million annually. Mission services were expanded through a focus on strategic collaborations and community partnerships, which have been essential to Goodwill’s service. Goodwill’s Roanoke Jobs Campus is one of five large, public facing centers in the service area. Through strategic partnerships the Roanoke Jobs Campus has become a community center for the surrounding inner-city neighborhood. Goodwill operates a Workforce Center, Youth Center, and Community Garden on the property. In 2019, the City of Roanoke co-located a library on the campu...s, and in 2020 an accessible playground was built by a local Kiwanis Club. Key Facts as of Year End 2020: Number of Employees 1,012 Total Revenue $58.4 million Retail Revenue $35.8 million Number of Retail Stores 40 Number of Community Job Centers/Campuses 5 People Served 63,078 People Placed in Employment 2,598 Service Area 35 counties and 14 cities in central, southwest, and southside Virginia HEADQUARTERS | Roanoke, Virginia In 1852, the town of Big Lick was first established. It was named for the large outcropping of salt, which drew wildlife. In 1882, it officially became Roanoke and was chartered as an independent city in 1884. Once known as a railroad town, the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, which surround Roanoke on all sides, now play a major role in the identity of Virginia’s largest city, west of Richmond. Today, the Star City of the South is known for its world-class outdoor recreation. It was recently awarded the elite IMBA Silver-Level Mountain Biking Ride Center status and is home to the Blue Ridge Marathon, touted as America’s toughest road marathon. A network of Greenways, an outdoor amphitheater, and its proximity to the Appalachian Trail, Smith Mountain Lake, and numerous natural parks make Roanoke a destination for tourist and outdoor enthusiast. The home of the Virginia Tech Carilion Medical School, Roanoke is becoming known as a center for innovation and is a multimillion dollar biomedical and tech hub. Only 30 minutes from Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg Campus, the metropolitan area is also adjacent to the City of Salem and the town of Vinton.
