We are seeking a CTY Problem-Based Online Instructor whose primary responsibilities are to develop their courses adhering to established pedagogical practices for problem-based learning, conduct their classes (including pedagogical experiences for students outside of the virtual learning classroom) within CTY's guidelines, monitor the progress of each of their students, and complete an evaluation of each student at the end of the course.
CTY's problem-based online courses blend real-time, collaborative, student-directed learning and independent exploration to solve complex, real-world problems. Course are grounded in problem-based learning and are interdisciplinary. Students meet with the instructor in two-hour blocks according to the session schedule. The first hour consists of live instruction to work on a targeted skill or concept connected to the course's focus. The second hour consists of small group work in which students collaboratively examine a particular aspect of the problem, generate novel approaches, and create solutions. At the end of the course, a panel of experts joins the class to hear each team's presentation and provide feedback.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Instructors are responsible for teaching an appropriately challenging and rigorous course(s) to highly able students assigned to them by CTY. Section sizes vary, but courses typically have 25 students.
Prior to Teaching Your First Class:
Carefully read all training materials. Familiarize yourself with any other program materials provided to you so that you are aware of the overall structure of the program and the rules and regulations for its students and staff. If any conflicts exist, please discuss with your supervisor.
Carefully read any materials provided for your course, the Teams Forum, and any additional resources.
Complete any required pre-summer training, including any online training courses.
Submit a list of required materials for students in your course by the provided deadline.
Thoroughly familiarize yourself with the provided course guide and any course text(s) or other instructional materials. Contact your supervisor if you have questions about expectations.
Acclimate yourself to all systems and/or tools used at CTY for virtual instruction, including but not limited to a learning management system, a video communications application, and a suite of productivity and collaboration applications.1
Beginning through End of Virtual Instruction:
Execute course according to provided course guide.
Monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing established learning objectives.
Interact independently with students using distance education platforms designated by CTY, primarily the LMS, the video communications application, and Johns Hopkins e-mail.
Provide timely feedback and encouragement to students on coursework and progress.
Manage student behavior and discipline in the online classroom working with supervisor(s) as appropriate.
Communicate with students, parents, CTY or JHU IT, and supervisor(s) to resolve any course related issues.
Suggest improvements to course design and content to your supervisor.
Educate students about CTY's expectations regarding academic integrity as discussed in training materials and staff meetings. Minimize opportunities for cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of academic dishonesty in your course.
As necessary, schedule mutually feasible times outside synchronous class sessions for individual conferences or supervised group work with students.
Attend all staff meetings called by your supervisor.
Assign class work according to guidelines discussed in the training materials and staff meetings.
Return assignments with appropriate comments to the students within one or two days. Monitor student progress and ensure that the amount and type of assignments for your students are appropriately challenging. If students take significantly more or less time to complete their work than you planned, those students' assignments should be adjusted accordingly.
Keep detailed and accurate records of your students' performance using rubrics and other indicators appropriate for PBL courses. Keep these records on file for one year so that they may be submitted to supervisor(s) in the event of a question or concern.
Advise your supervisor of any disciplinary, emotional, or academic problem a student may be having as soon as you are aware of the problem. Complete and submit program-specific documentation, and handle such issues according to the protocol established.
Assist in ensuring the health and safety of all students by following safety protocols covered in orientation and written materials as requested.
Cooperate with occasional virtual observers of your class (supervisors, administrators or approved visitors to the program). Every effort will be made to advise you of visitors beforehand and to keep observations from disrupting your sessions.
Abide by CTY's research policy.
Schedule time for students to complete program and course evaluations and any other questionnaires.
Complete evaluations of your students' academic performance using provided forms and guidelines.
Immediately report errors or other problems in the virtual classrooms, such as broken links, to your supervisor and follow instructions for resolving them.
Submit, in specified format, descriptions of student culminating products and content covered during the course.
After the Completion of the Virtual Course:
Be available throughout the year for discussion of the program or of particular students. Occasionally, instances arise in which CTY staff need further details of a student's work or of conversations (if any) with a student's parents. Furthermore, CTY staff may wish to discuss the course you taught as they plan for future sessions. Be sure that your supervisor has an address, telephone number, and email address where you can be reached during the upcoming academic year.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in a related field is required.
At least two years of teaching or tutoring experience is required
Demonstrated prior formal course work or training in PBL pedagogy or prior experience teaching at least one PBL course.
Additional (graduate) education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.
Master's degree is preferred.
At least two years of teaching or tutoring experience working specifically with middle or high school students.
Experience teaching or tutoring online.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of course(s) content for applicable grades.
Knowledge of PBL pedagogy
Positive, proactive, and professional written and spoken communication skills using various technology is critical.
Must be very student-oriented.
Ability to effectively lead video-conferences, including ability to effectively manage virtual breakout rooms.
Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
Maturity, responsibility, and creativity.
Ability to access and transmit information using a computer and do so for extended periods of time.
Operate a computer and office machinery.
Communicate regularly via email, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and telephone with internal and external audiences and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
Work varied hours including weekends and evenings as determined with supervisor.
Must provide own laptop or desktop computer with security configuration allowing use of JHU-CTY platforms. Chromebooks and devices owned by schools/other institutions are generally not sufficient.
Must have access to broadband internet.
