Life with Cancer - Clinical Therapist 2

Life with Cancer, a program of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, has become Northern Virginia's leading cancer education and support organization. We offer a variety of programs and services for patients, survivors, and their family members to help individuals cope with cancer, its treatments, and survivorship in the best possible way.

This position is at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute . Therapist scope of responsibilities:
  • Ability to assess psychosocial distress and mental health disorders and plan for evidenced-based therapeutic interventions related to patient and family needs and goals. Integrates psychosocial assessment using information related to cultural, ethnic, age, sexual orientation, and other factors into plan of care.
  • Provides appropriate clinical interventions that are theory and evidenced based, related to adjustment to illness, crisis intervention, trauma, survivorship, grief, or other clinical issues that may arise for patients/families after a cancer diagnosis.
  • Conducts distress screening according to Commission on Cancer standards.
  • Refers patients/families and caregivers to appropriate resources.
  • Documents assessment and plan in clinical record as appropriate.
  • Acts as an active multidisciplinary team member to assure that patient is provided needed psychosocial support and referred to appropriate health care and community resources in order to transition the patient and/or family effectively into survivorship and optimize outcomes.
  • Presents inpatient and community programs that benefit patient, families, and staff.
  • Facilitates support and psycho-education groups for patients and/or caregivers in the community.
  • Acts as a resource to the health care team to improve understanding of the psychosocial impact of a cancer diagnosis across the disease trajectory and mental health disorders.
  • Advocates for appropriate services to patients/families to improve knowledge, adherence to treatment and decrease distress.
  • Able and willing to provide supervision/training to graduate students during clinical internship and works collaboratively with faculty liaison and clinical supervisor.
  • Practices within a professional code of ethics and strives to increase professional knowledge, develop expertise, and obtain further licensures or certifications.
  • Maintains CEU's for licensure.
  • Participates in staff meetings and professional committees as assigned. Participates in activities integral to the maintenance and continued development of Inova Life with Cancer.
