General Summary/Purpose: Inmas (Internship Network in the Mathematical Sciences) is a new program funded by the NSF, with twin hubs at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Illinois. Inmas will aid industry, government and non-profit partners in solving strategic challenges by developing internship projects that transform graduate students’ career readiness and strengthen the nation’s innovation ecosystem. JHU will serve as the Inmas Mid-Atlantic network hub, with UMBC, University of Delaware, and Drexel University as initial nodes. The Senior Project Manager is responsible for - Maintaining relationships with students and faculty at the hubs and nodes.
- Connecting with companies, government entities, and nonprofits for the purpose of developing internship projects.
- Matching internships with students.
- Manage reporting and communication with external partners; support the development and implementation of communication messaging on social media platforms.
The initial appointment is for one year with renewal based on performance and continued availability of NSF funding. Specific Duties & Responsibilities: Networking / relationship building (40%) - Work with the PI of the Inmas grant to create, maintain and cultivate a network of partners/clients in industry, government and academia.
- Work with stakeholders at the node institutions, in Illinois and nearby states, to learn the capabilities of researchers and graduate students in the mathematical sciences.
- Introduce host personnel to faculty and students at the university nodes.
Internship development (40%) - Develop internship opportunities for mathematical sciences students at industry and government host organizations.
- Assist in negotiating the agreements necessary to facilitate collaborations between internship hosts and Inmas, the nodes, and interns.
- Assist in matching students at the nodes to the internship projects.
- Serve as Inmas point of contact for interns.
- Oversee the interns’ reporting requirements, and ensure public visibility of the internship projects.
Project management role (20%) - Coordinate with the external assessment consultant.
- Assist with report writing and publicizing Inmas activities.
- Suggest improvements to the program, and opportunities for expansion.
- Contribute to the success of the Inmas project by providing help and support to the PI and colleagues as needed, and as priorities and demands change within the organization.
- Participate in Inmas training events, and assist or conduct them if qualified to do so.
- Provide career development support to the node universities as needed.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory): - Master’s degree in related field.
- Five years related experience including project management
Preferred Qualifications: - PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics.
- Internship or work experience in industry or a scientific lab.
- Broad basic knowledge in modern science and technology.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Broad basic knowledge of the mathematical sciences.
- Driver’s license.
- Desire to pursue a career outside of academic research and teaching.
