Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School (AoH) seeks an innovative and experienced Director of Development to join its extended leadership team and spearhead the Advancement Office’s Fundraising team. Established in 1985, AoH provides education, workforce development training, and college and job placement to adults in DC. Our mission is to provide high quality adult education and services that change lives and improve our communities. The Advancement Department is responsible for building and maintaining strategic external relationships with key stakeholders and identifying opportunities that advance the mission and priorities of AoH. The Advancement Office consists of the following teams: Development, Advocacy, Communications, Student Recruitment, and Volunteer Program.

DETAILS ON THE POSITION
Under the direction of the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Development will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic development plan to increase foundation, corporate, government, major, and planned giving revenue. This role will also lead, manage, and supervise the daily fundraising operations of AoH along with providing direct supervision of the development team. As a member of AoH’s extended leadership team, the Director of Development must be a collaborative and creative leader who is able to guide the fundraising team through a uniquely challenging time.
Strategy & Direction Setting
Under the direction of the Chief Advancement Officer, lead the implementation of a comprehensive and cohesive development plan, contribute to both annual and long-range strategies to support sustainability and growth across all funding areas, in service of AoH’s mission, vision, and values.
Institutional and Major Giving
Significantly increase philanthropic support from corporations, foundations, government, and individuals at local, regional, and national levels by personally building and managing a portfolio of (approximately 100) corporate, foundation, government, and major gift prospects (gifts of $10,000 or more); closing 10 gifts annually, 2-3 per quarter.
Direct Reports: Director of Development supervises the Senior Individual Giving Officer, Development Operations and Grants Manager, Grant Writer (contractor), Database consultant (contractor), and Volunteer Coordinator
Indirect Reports: Donor Relations Coordinator
Actively collaborate with team members across the AoH extended leadership team to build upon AoH’s culture of philanthropy, develop organizational funding priorities, and to ensure clear communication and streamlined processes.
Organizational Wide Responsibilities
Commit to AoH’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) values and policies of anti-racism. This includes participating in race equity and anti-harassment trainings, familiarizing yourself with the policies in the employee handbook, engaging in DEI work at AoH, and furthering your own independent journey with anti-racism.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical schedule is Monday-Friday (8-9 hours per day) with some early mornings, evenings, and weekends as necessary.
This position is currently a work-from-home position due to the COVID-19 pandemic (will be required report into the office when pandemic ends).
Must be able to withstand extended viewing of computer screens.
This position will sit in an open/shared office environment with moderate noise levels.
AoH has sites in Wards 5 and 8. This position’s office will be located at the Ward 5 site. Both sites are air-conditioned, wheelchair accessible, and is in proximity to public transportation.
This is a full-time exempt position, offering $70,000 -$85,000 in annual salary, commensurate with experience. AoH has excellent benefits, including flex schedules, vacation, sick, health/dental benefits, short-term disability coverage, and the opportunity to participate in a retirement plan.

Bachelor’s degree and/or at least 6 years of experience and measurable success in nonprofit fundraising, including setting and meeting goals;
Demonstrated managerial experience leading a strong team and creating a positive work environment;
Successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating, and soliciting significant contributions from Corporations, Foundations, and major donors;
Previous experience with a capital campaign (preferred but not required).
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to set strategic direction and execute such strategy effectively.
Strong interpersonal skills to identify, cultivate, and solicit significant contributions.
Strong analytical skills and ability to leverage fundraising data as a tool (familiarity with Donor Perfect or similar CRM is preferred but not required).
Clear and effective verbal and written communication with a wide range of staff, prospects, donors, vendors, and other stakeholders.
Highly motivated, goal-oriented, entrepreneurial self-starter who is a strategic and creative thinker with the ability to work independently and in team setting.
Ability to articulate the case for support and to interact with Board members, donors and prospects at the highest level.
Highly professional and ethical standards for handling confidential or sensitive information, including knowledge of nonprofit best practices.
Understanding of Washington, DC and its philanthropic community is a plus.
Understanding of adult education, workforce development, and charter sector landscapes is a plus.
High energy and passion for AOH’s mission is essential.
