The Urban Land Institute (ULI) is the preeminent global, multidisciplinary real estate organization, facilitating the open exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience among local, national and international industry leaders and policymakers dedicated to creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide. To further the mission of this important social and economic resource, the ULI and its related Urban Land Institute Foundation seek its next president to lead its philanthropic, engagement and campaign efforts.
A nonprofit, member-driven research and education organization, the Institute has more than 46,000 global members representing the entire spectrum of land use and real estate development disciplines, both in private enterprise and public service. Members can join at any time in their career and supplement professional education, benefit from mentorship, serve their professional community as a mentee and impact future generations through philanthropic legacy. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., and serving subsidiary organizations across the globe, ULI’s members seek to improve the practices and policies that drive effective land use and urban development.
2020 marks the ULI Foundation's 50th anniversary. Over the course of the Foundation’s first half century, the generosity and commitment of ULI supporters has propelled steady growth in core content areas and fostered elevation of ULI’s transformative value. To augment its capacity, expand its programming and secure its financial future, ULI implemented a 2019 Global Strategic Plan. To complement the strategic plan, the ULI Foundation underwent a feasibility study then launched the silent phase of a $100 million comprehensive campaign. In particular, the organization seeks to build its endowment, thus allowing the organization to plan its future activities with confidence. The new president will continue the silent phase execution and raise early lead major gifts while maintaining focus and momentum on current use and endowed giving.
The position reports to ULI’s Global CEO, Ed Walter, with a dotted line to the ULI Foundation Chairman, Doug Abbey. Working closely with colleagues in the Institute, the president will lead an advancement team focused on principal, major, annual, planned and foundation giving, continuously enhance the Institute’s culture of philanthropy, launch the public phase of the campaign and raise its nucleus fund contemporaneously. Thus, the successful candidate will be an advancement professional of considerable experience and capacity, someone with campaign leadership experience, an understanding of best practices in individual giving and foundation relations and a personal track record as a major gift fund raiser. Candidates who demonstrate a personal affinity for, or experience with, cross-disciplinary real estate and built environment missions will be at a particular advantage.
The ULI is at the forefront of some of the nation’s and the world’s most pressing issues. Its Foundation president will play a central role in ensuring that the Institute maintains and expands its influence on these critical issues.
