The AAAS News & Information Director plans and oversees the production of news content that promotes AAAS initiatives and programs to advance science and serve society. The goals of the position require the director to strategically identify, write, edit, deliver, track, and report on AAAS initiatives and programmatic news for public audiences and to motivate reporters and media contacts to cover the organization’s activities.
The director leads news and information efforts on behalf of AAAS, in close coordination with the Chief Communications Officer, which includes responding to media queries on diverse topics from journalists around the world. The director leads news strategy for the AAAS website, including establishing standards of journalistic integrity and editorial excellence, best practices in online content presentation, tracking audience metrics, and quality control policies and practices. The News & Information Director collaborates with colleagues across the Office of Public Programs, the Executive Office, and the organization.

What You’ll Do
Manages and directs all news content on the AAAS website homepage and the AAAS news webpages (www.AAAS.org).
Identifies, writes, assigns, and tracks news content on AAAS programmatic activities and initiatives for communications planning that includes coverage on the AAAS website and in diverse media outlets; maintains and monitors related editorial standards.
Develops the AAAS Annual Meeting newsroom briefings lineup and assists in coordinating AAAS Annual Meeting newsroom content, including pitching, monitoring, and tracking news coverage.
Collaborates with programmatic staff and directors of Multimedia, Social Media, Science Press Package, and AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards on news coverage and strategic projects.
Contributes and participates in AAAS strategic communications to further its mission, promote its leadership, and enhance its standing among scientific, public policy, and public audiences.
5-10 years’ experience as an online news reporter/editor, science writer/editor, and/or public information officer.
Successful track record as a supervisor.
Strong knowledge of news-delivery and media relations principles and best practices.
Strategic communication skills.
Ability to effectively evaluate and leverage online analytics to guide strategic news delivery decisions.
Track record of effective pitching to and working with journalists and editors.
Highly skilled in news writing and editing with the ability to generate accurate, in-depth copy, including both feature stories as well as scientific, technical, and science policy content.
Ability to take quality photographs and select relevant visuals and multimedia.
Familiarity with AP style, content management systems, and video and social media technologies.
Public speaking and presentation skills.
