The Director of Institutional Advancement is responsible for all aspects of an integrated advancement and external relations program including fundraising, public affairs, communications, and marketing. Provides strategic oversight and coordination of the integrated efforts of the external relations functions to ensure the mission of the School is upheld. The director will work with the Head of School, administration, members of the Board, and the school community.
Works closely with School leadership in support of the Head of School; provides leadership to enhance relationships and communication with internal and external constituencies consistent with the School’s mission.
Establishes an excellent and collaborative working relationship with the Head of School and the Administrative Team to ensure sound fundraising strategies are developed and implemented.
Develops and provides leadership in close collaboration with the Board and other volunteer leaders, the Head of School, the leadership team, and staff that will lead the philanthropic support required to underwrite the needs of the School including endowment and operating funds.
Creates support for the School’s strategic plans by securing new sources of revenue; manages a defined group of major gift prospects through active cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
Leads and directs the advancement team; works collaboratively with directors and managers in the development of an annual plan that achieves the fundraising goals, and managing the implementation of the plan throughout the year. Oversees the daily operations, staffing, and budgeting for team; mentors, manages, and develops staff to ensure fundraising goals are achieved.
Provides leadership and direction to the integrated efforts of the external relations functions; promotes collegial relationships of mutual respect that result in cohesive work strategies.
Assumes overall executive responsibility, including financial planning, budget control, and the development and monitoring of policies and procedures for the operations of the external relations division and the achievement of their goals.
Travels to advance the School’s capital campaign, recruit, and inspire volunteers, raise awareness of the School, and cultivate and solicit prospects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of fundraising principles, practices, and daily operations within a development office. Knowledge of strategic institutional branding, volunteer recruitment, advertising, marketing, and public and community relations. Ability to think strategically to inform and frame plans and execution.
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, including public speaking and the ability to articulate and present clear, persuasive written and verbal communications. Poise and presence to inspire confidence among a broad range of internal and external audiences.
Advanced understanding of administering budgets. Ability to think strategically and analyze trends; develop short- and long-term projections.
Demonstrates a collaborative management style; has a relational management style with an ability to motivate and develop teams.
Ability to work effectively as a team leader as well as independently; ability to train, inspire, and motivate volunteers, peers, and subordinates.
Clear commitment to the importance of the mission and programs; knowledge of school's traditions, customs, and hierarchy desirable. Ability to communicate broadly with a range of external constituencies.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management or related field; master’s degree preferred.
Eight years progressively responsible experience managing an external relations portfolio; ten years of experience as a senior level development officer.
Proven track record in major gift solicitations and capital campaign experience.
Ten years supervisory experience developing, managing, and evaluating team members.
