The Manager of Foundation Relations will have a significant effect on the Epilepsy Foundation’s ability to engage current and future donors to advance the Epilepsy Foundation’s interests by researching and identifying sources of support, proactively seeking opportunities to generate new proposals based on charitable foundation guidelines and interests, and by maintaining strong communication ties with foundation donors and prospects.
Key qualifications for success include identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding institutional and family foundations, the ability to actively engage in establishing and maintaining long-term partnerships with the charitable foundation sector, and the proactive willingness to support, through capacity-building resources, the fundraising functions through local Epilepsy Foundation affiliated organizations.
The Manager of Foundation Relations reports to the Director of Corporate Alliance and Foundation Relations, who reports to the Chief Development Officer.
(30%) Design, implement, and manage a comprehensive proactive development plan focused on expanding and enhancing family and institutional foundation relationships with a special emphasis on developing high value sustainable relationships. Identify, evaluate, cultivate and solicit five – and particularly six figures (and larger) – philanthropic commitments to support the mission and goals of the Epilepsy Foundation.
(20%) Identify and research key connections between the Epilepsy Foundation’s volunteer leaders, current major donors, and the Epilepsy Foundation’s mission and charitable institutional and family foundations to uncover potential funding relationships.
(20%) Develop highly competitive proposals for institutional and family foundation prospects and leverage the institutional or family foundation’s goals and preferences in with the Epilepsy Foundation’s goals and mission. Build and maintain a rigorous schedule of contacts for foundation representatives, creating moves management plans related to them, compelling presentations and comprehensive fundraising proposals. Monitor proposal deadlines, prepare and edit proposals, and manage proposal submissions
(20%) Strategize possible fundable programs and activities within the Epilepsy Foundation. Work directly with Epilepsy Foundation stakeholders to develop new and creative approaches to foundation funding and facilitate appropriate opportunities for Epilepsy Foundation stakeholders to interact with institutional and family foundation decision-makers. Advise Epilepsy Foundation staff and leaders on possible areas of interest, cultivation of foundations special requirements in the development and presentation of proposals.
(10%) Maintain high quality stewardship process for foundation prospects and donors. Ensure that stewardship and reporting requirements are met to sustain successful partnerships by maintaining detailed records of solicitation activities.
Knowledge of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies and techniques, particularly in the area of foundation fundraising techniques required.
Demonstrate record of success in generating significant commitments from foundations.
Demonstrate ability in grant and proposal writing at appropriate levels for varied proposal development.
Demonstrate knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for obtaining information about the giving programs of foundations.
Self-motivation and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal and networking skills with large groups as well as with individuals are essential.
Knowledge of SharePoint preferred.
Experience working in CRM's to implement best practices with data tracking and management.
Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.
Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective foundation donors and interact via telephone and in person with funding partner representatives.
Demonstrate ability to take primary responsibility for diverse number of projects and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
Must possess a high level of independence in accomplishing the responsibilities of the position.
Must be self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision.
Education and Experience
A Bachelors degree and a minimum of 3-5 years of demonstrated successful corporate and/or foundation grant-based fundraising experience, preferably in an affiliate-model organization.
