Overview of responsibilities:
Develop and execute a comprehensive rental housing public policy strategy including strategic communications, grassroots mobilization, and policy development;
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with members of the executive branch, councilmembers and staff, including members of key committees having jurisdiction over rental housing issues that will enable the effective advocacy of AOBA’s public policy vision in service to its multifamily members;
Create education materials and programming to inform public officials on all aspects of operating rental housing in the District of Columbia;
Develop new and foster existing strategic partnerships with key private sector stakeholders including associations, nonprofits and other groups that share legislative interests and common goals with AOBA;
Author testimony, correspondence, and analysis designed to effectively advocate for AOBA’s rental housing policy positions;
Communicate with multifamily members to inform member companies and develop consensus on legislative and regulatory issues and developments;
Design and lead issue mobilization efforts that facilitate member engagement with the public sector and educate target audience about policies and AOBA positions;
Partner with AOBA’s communications team on the development and execution of issues campaigns;
Work collaboratively with fellow Vice President of Government Affairs, DC on broader business issues that affect both commercial and multifamily members in the District of Columbia;
Provide staff support as needed on rental housing issues in Montgomery County, Maryland; and
Represent and speak on behalf of the association in public meetings, conferences and sessions on rental housing issues as needed.
Successful candidate must have a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in government affairs, public administration, public policy, or related fields. A masters and/or law degree preferred. Candidates with DC rental housing industry experience who have worked with the public sector on policy matters are also encouraged to apply. Significant consideration will be given to candidates with the following:
Exceptional writing skills and ability to communicate effectively with all levels of government as well as internal and external audiences.
Experience working directly with the Executive Office of the Mayor and Council of the District of Columbia, including staff, on legislation and other initiatives and knowledge of DC legislative, regulatory and political processes.
Knowledge of rental housing laws in the District of Columbia and housing policy best practices, practices, trends and research.
Public affairs and/or experience directing issues campaigns.
