| Posting Summary: The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities (VFH) seeks an Executive Director to oversee all aspects of institutional operations, communications, advocacy, advancement, and long-term strategic planning. Established in 1974, the VFH has grown to become the largest and most diversely funded state humanities council in the country, producing festivals, public radio programs, and digital resources. VFH exists as a partnership between the University of Virginia and a non-profit Board whose mission is to connect people and ideas to explore the human experience and inspire cultural engagement. A trailblazer in the field of public humanities, VFH uses diverse humanities programming to tell Virginia's stories in innovative, dynamic, and inclusive ways to a national and global audience.|
The Executive Director will take a lead role in organizational fundraising, strategic planning, government relations, and institutional advancement. The Executive Director will set the vision for the organization in consultation with the Board and manages and oversees all departmental activities through staff. As Chief Executive Officer, this position also works closely with a management team including the Chief Operating Officer, Director of External Relations, Director of Philanthropy, Business Manager, and with all VFH program directors.
The Executive Director serves as the departmental signatory and hiring official for a 40-person staff, enforcing policies set by the University and funders including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as corporate, foundation, and individual donors.
The Executive Director will have opportunities to succeed and contribute to the growth and advancement of the VFH. Some key priority areas are:
- Organizational Fundraising and Institutional Advocacy
- Management and Oversight of the VFH
- Organizational Vision and Planning
- Program Development and Evaluation
Candidates are expected to have a record of successful leadership, preferably in an educational, nonprofit, or organization involved in public humanities setting. Bachelor's Degree required.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including skills in presenting and facilitating discussions

- Ability to guide a talented staff and inspire current and prospective donors and partners to deepen their commitment to the organization
